Katy Perry Reaches for the Stars in Historic All-Female Blue Origin Space Launch

Pop icon Katy Perry blasted off into space on Monday as part of a groundbreaking all-female crew aboard Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin spacecraft. Joining her on the flight was “CBS Mornings” anchor Gayle King, along with four other inspiring women from various fields.

The New Shepard rocket launched at 9:30 a.m. ET from Blue Origin’s facility in West Texas, soaring more than 62 miles above Earth, past the Kármán line — the internationally recognized edge of space. The eight-minute journey offered the passengers several minutes of weightlessness and breathtaking views of Earth.

The autonomous rocket carried a capsule containing Perry, King, Lauren Sánchez (journalist and Jeff Bezos’ fiancée), engineer Aisha Bowe, activist Amanda Nguyen, and film producer Kerianne Flynn. The mission aims to shine a spotlight on women in aerospace and science.

Perry, who had teased “I gotta sing in space” on Instagram before the launch, kept her promise. Though it wasn’t clearly captured during the live broadcast, Gayle King later revealed that Katy sang “What a Wonderful World” during the flight.

“I’ve covered that song before. It felt right,” Perry said. “This isn’t about me or my music — it’s about honoring this planet and creating space for future generations of women to look up and say, ‘I can do that.’”

King admitted she was nervous but excited, calling the experience life-changing. As the rocket pierced through the atmosphere and broke the sound barrier, cheers erupted from the ground.

The capsule landed safely minutes later, guided by parachutes, closing a powerful moment not just in space tourism, but in the broader movement for representation and inspiration in science and exploration.
