“Everything You Need to Know About REAL ID Before the Airport Deadline Arrives”

Starting May 7, travelers flying from U.S. airports will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another approved ID to pass TSA security. Without it, you may face delays, extra screening, or even be denied entry at the checkpoint.

Although the rule has been delayed multiple times since 2008, many people are still unprepared. As of early 2024, only 56% of IDs nationwide are REAL ID-compliant. The Department of Homeland Security expects that number to reach just over 61% by the deadline.

DMVs are overwhelmed as travelers rush to meet the requirement. States like New York and California are extending hours or offering special services — including REAL ID processing at events like the New York International Auto Show.

If you don’t yet have your REAL ID, now is the time to make an appointment and avoid last-minute stress.
